Dennis' Bucket list

We all have that hypothetical bucket list filled with places to see or things to experience before our time here is up.

Staffers at OLV Human Services are helping one patient cross off items on his list.

79-year-old Dennis Martin was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma as well as cancer in his lungs and lymph nodes after moving to the Amber Lynne House in 2021. He was placed in Hospice care.

The life-long Buffalonian decided to honor his love of sports and so began a tour of Buffalo’s teams.

It kicked off with the Bills 2023 home opener against the Las Vegas Raiders- Dennis’ first game at Highmark Stadium. He and his caretaker, Kim Davis, enjoyed popcorn, hot dogs and especially a Bills win from his favorite player Josh Allen!

In February, Dennis braved the cold to rent out a suite for his first- ever Sabres game. He was joined by his caretakers and his late wife’s family. As an avid hockey fan, he was thrilled to meet Sabres commentators Marty Biron and Brian Duff before their broadcast.

Dennis’ list wouldn’t be complete without a trip to a ball game. With the help of Lawley Insurance, Dennis and his family were treated to a suite at a Bisons game in June. Dennis threw out the first pitch and was on the field for the National Anthem.

Most recently, Dennis has graduated out of Hospice care. While his internal health may not be improving, his caretakers say his spirits are as high as ever and you would never know he is as sick as his diagnosis says.
